Ari Macroupolis: Within Arms Reach

ari-photography-2Born in Amsterdam, Ari Marcroupolis moved to New York in 1979. When he was twenty two he quickly became part of the downtown art scene printing black and white photographs for Andy Warhol.

Living in New York during the early days of punk and hip-hop, Marcroupolis found a range of subjects. He has since captured a range of youth culture in intimate photographs which connect the viewer to subject with powerful engagement. Well known for his skate photography, Within Arms Reach is the first mid-career retrospective of Marcroupolis’ work. The assembled photographs extend beyond the expected and include portraits of artists like Robert Mapplethorpe.

Within Arms Reach is on view at the Berkley Art Museum through February 7, 2010.
